Best known for his assemblage sculptures made from stuffed children's toys, often set upon the 'stage' of a homemade afghan, Kelley draws from popular culture as well as the modernist traditions of the found object and collage to comment on late twentieth-century American society. Familiar with his work from presentations at Documenta X (1997), and major solo museum exhibitions worldwide throughout the 1990s, Mike Kelley's audience is very broad, ranging from academics and teenage comic-book cultists to curators of the world's most prestigious museums.
